Preparing for a Pest Control Visit

A little preparation makes the visit more useful. Always follow the provider's own instructions first.

Before the visit

  • Ask the provider for their specific preparation instructions and follow those first
  • Write down where and when you've seen activity
  • Clear access to sinks, appliances, baseboards, attic hatches and crawl-space entries
  • Put away food, dishes and pet bowls if asked
  • Plan for pets — ask whether they need to be out of treated areas and for how long

During the visit

  • Walk the property with the technician if they allow it
  • Ask what they found and where
  • Ask what products are being used and what safety instructions apply
  • Get the scope and price in writing before work begins

After the visit

  • Follow any re-entry, ventilation or cleaning instructions
  • Note what changes over the following days
  • Ask when to expect follow-up and how to reach them if activity continues

A note on safety

Always follow the label directions on any pest-control product you use yourself. Never mix pesticide products, and keep products away from children, pets and food-preparation areas. If you have a health question, contact a healthcare provider or poison control rather than a pest-control company.
